Eku Uhuo, Abakaliki
Traditional Rulers representing different clans and resident of Lagos stateall from Ebonyi state have raised alarm over the incessant killing in the state and urged governor David Umahi to set up Commission of Enquiry as to unravel the cause of the killings.
According to press statement made available to the public, reads in full:
"Our attention has been drawn to the unbridled violence and the spate of killings in Ebonyi State of Nigeria.
"The Council of Eze ndi Igbo in Lagos of Ebonyi State extraction hereby condemn in very strong terms the penchant for taking human lives in our State. These violence and killings have continued unabated and have remained a very sad commentary, and a narrative we hate to subsist. We condemn the following, among others:
"Recent killings and destruction of properties in Akaeze, Ivo LGA
- Recent killings in Akpoha, Afikpo North LGA by alleged gun men
- Killings and unmitigated violence in Ezza- Effium, Ohaukwu LGA.
"As Royal fathers mindful of the security of lives and properties of our people we demand as follows:
"1.That the State Government institute a commission of inquiry to unravel the immediate and remote causes of this mayhem let loose on some communities in the State.
"2. That perpetrators of these dastardly acts be fished out and prosecuted according to the law.
"3. That the Chairpersons of LGAs and Town Unions as well as the Traditional institutions organise sensitization/truce meetings with a view to addressing their people and brokering peace in their areas.
"4. That while the council commend the creation of the Ebubeagu security outfit, we demand that criminal elements within the outfit be identified and their activities reevaluated to ensure they are within the ambit of their rules of engagement.
"5. That law enforcement agencies be alive to their duties of protection of lives and properties of the people, and allowed unencumbered latitude to perform this function.
"We remain appreciative of the developmental and transformation agenda of our indefatigable Governor, Engr Dave Nweze Umahi FNSE, FNATE and we affirm our commitment and support to make Ebonyi State great.
