By Alo David, Abakaliki
The saying that, “Service to humanity is service to God" has been spotted in the life of Dr. Nwakaego Emmanuel, founder, Ego Bekee Foundation for Better Living who was honoured by members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Ebonyi state chapter for her humanitarian service.
Nwankego while receiving members of SWAN in her Isu country home in Onicha LGA, commended the leadership for founding her worthy of the honour.
The philanthropist who her foundation has empowered hundreds of Ebonyi women in skills acquisition, education, trade and cash gifts said that the award has challenged her to do more especially in the area of sports.
Earlier in her address, Dr Nwakaego appreciated members of SWAN Ebonyi state chapter for their contributions to the society.
She hinted that her foundation which is focused on women development had done alot behind camera since the intention was to touch lives and has no political undertone.
"I want to thank SWAN members in Ebonyi State for remembering me. I do not think I do as much as you people did in your presentation. I also want to thank you people, for remembering that there's somebody like me in Ebonyi state.
"Most of our humanitarian charities are done behind the camera because it is a natural gift. It is not something that is done out of politics but it is inherent in me. I do what I do because I know where I am coming from.
She added, "My background wasn't as sweet as it is today. If you look back from where you are coming there are lots of people that are still struggling.
"Some are at the point of struggle and do not make it and some lost their lives. Growing up to what I am today I give more to charity because I need to save humanity, I need to save lives of the needs, especially that of a girl child, and that is what has given birth to what you people are doing today in appreciating me. In doing this to me I am challenged to do more.
"If I have been doing percent I should increase it to 50% or more. Because despite trying to hide away from people not knowing what we are doing yet it goes out. One promise I am giving to you is that whatever that has caused this recognition from your Association, we will not disappoint you, people. Our charity work will not stop today rather we will do more.
She, however, appealed to journalists to be objective in their reportage especially as the country enters political season.
"We encourage journalists especially now that we are entering into the political season to be objective in their reportage".
Nwankego who is also the founder of Ebonyi Women Traders Association of Nigeria refuted the speculation that she was contesting for political position and stated that her brother's ambition who's vying for Governorship is her major interest to ensure he came out victoriously.
"I am a business person and politician too. I couldn't contest just like some of you ask because my brother is contesting to be the Governor of Ebonyi State, so I wouldn't be selfish rather I should support him.
" I am still a young woman who still has about twenty years to play politics, so by the time God says it is time for me I will play the politics and help our young women to get into leadership positions in the state. We will do our best to encourage Ebonyi women.
Continuing, "I am the founder of Ebonyi Women Traders Association of Nigeria. It is an organization that is in the 36 States of the federation. And that foundation is found because there is something we need to teach our women who are not privileged to get exposed as we do. God has been helping us since the foundation started, there is a lot of difference in the atmosphere in the lives of Ebonyi women.
She revealed that her foundation has helped alot in changing the wrong perception about training female child in education.
"Ebonyi women have started seeing that it is not wasteful to give birth to a girl child; it is not wasteful to train a girl child like it used to be before.
" In the past, when you are training a girl child it looks as if you are wasting your money but most of our mother who happens to key into this foundation have started giving quality education to their girl child. It is no longer all about men again in Ebonyi State.
"We are changing the narrative in the lives of every girl child in Ebonyi State".
