Confusion As Ebonyi Senator-Elect, Nwebonyi Denies Backing Akpabio For Senate President

The Ebonyi North Senator-elect during the 2023 National Assembly election, Barr. Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi has debunked a report alleging that he has begun to canvass support for Senator Godswill Akpabio to become the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.

Nwebonyi on Friday through Ohamadike Media Team in a counter press release against the allegation, which he described as puerile and watery propaganda allegedly circulated on social media by some bloggers, made this known. The release also read: "The blogger alleged that the Senator-elect for Ebonyi North Senatorial zone, Chief Barrister Onyekachi Nwebonyi has called on his distinguished colleagues especially those from the South East to work for the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President of the 10th Assembly to build bridges of unity across different geopolitical zones."

He said: "It’s worth noting that the position of Senate President is open for contest from both ranking and non-ranking Senators. "Interestingly, many eminent personalities from different geopolitical zones including the Governor of Ebonyi state and the Senator-elect for Ebonyi South Senatorial district, His Excellency, Chief Engineer David Nweze Umahi have indicated interest in vying for the coveted position. "Even though Governor Umahi is a greenhorn at the Red Chambers, he is eminently qualified to lead the National Assembly as Senate President. His cognate experience as Party Chairman, Deputy Governor, Executive Governor and Chairman South East Governor’s Forum prepared him for any leadership position in the country. "Moreover, it is a considered opinion that the position of the Senate Presidency should be zoned to the South East to give them a sense of belonging. The cap fits Governor Umahi considering his miraculous magic wand in Ebonyi state. "Therefore, the Senate Standing Rules ought to be amended to pave the way for meritocracy instead of mediocrity. "It’s therefore strange and preposterous to allege that Chief Nwebonyi would be canvasing support for another person outside the Governor of Ebonyi state and Ebonyi South Senator-elect, Chief Engineer David Nweze Umahi who has shown much competence and capacity in leadership. "The general public is therefore invited to discountenance the baseless rumour as it’s the handiwork of mischief makers who are hell-bent on fomenting bad blood between Chief Nwebonyi and his mentor. "The faceless blogger is given 24 hours to retract the statement or face litigation."
