Whirlwind wrecks havoc in Ebonyi Building market, destroys goods, stalls
Heavy wind has wrecked havoc in the Integrated Building Materials Market at Amegu of Abakaliki suburbs destroying goods and stalls worth over a billion of naira.
The incident according to traders occured yesterday night following the heavy rain accompanied with the wind.
Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi state Commissioner for Marketing Development and Parks, Prof Nwogo Obasi described the incident as devastating noting that alot of items were affected according to records.
He appealed to traders to observe market ethics by ensuring that goods are displayed only on designated points where they would be taken back to stalls at the end of daily business.
"This morning the chairman of Integrated called me and told me what happened and am here to confirm what happened and will say that it's quite pathetic as serious havoc was done with the rain that accompanied with wind yesterday,that such incident occured.
"I have to leave what we are doing in the field currently to be here and have noted it and will take what happened to the relevant agencies of what happened so that they will come to their aid.
He added, "And I want to use this opportunity to inform the traders that there's need for traders to come to term with market ethics. This is because if look at most of the goods destroyed, you will see that there were carelessly displayed on the shoot out and this buildings were carefully design in such a way that you will have place for put your goods and space for you to display goods outside. And those goods displayed are taking in at the end of business of the day and to be brought out the next day and wish to say that as we work to bring them hope, pray that God restore to them all they have lost.
The president , Integrated Building Materials Market Abakaliki, Chief Fidelis Onwe explained that he got a distress call by 1:00 o'clock in the morning from security of the destruction which affected the market and urged the state Governor, Francis Nwifuru to please visit the market as to ascertain the true situation of the market as alot of challenges are facing the market that needs government intervention.
Also, the secretary of the Aluminum section, Mgbada Vincent, Linus Nwankwo, Uzochukwu Nwire who is the chairman of the Building Materials Market and Udeze Chinonso who lost sixteen sheets of glass appealed to Ebonyi state Emergency Management Agency,Eb-SEMA and National Emergency Management Agency,NEMA to come to their aids as many families lost their source of livelihood to the disaster.
Our correspondent reports that the heavy wind destroyed alot of goods including buildings, bundles of pipe, roofs and other items.
