NNL: Ebonyi Sports Commissioner Confirms Abakaliki FC's Return

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Richard Ugo-Idike, has confirmed the return of Abakaliki FC to the Nigeria National League (NNL), the country’s second-tier football division.
Hon.Idike disclosed that the state government successfully acquired a league slot for the club, which had been relegated last season. It was gathered that the slot was secured from Hammola FC, a club previously based in Osun State.
The Abakaliki FC, popularly known as “De Rice Boys”, now returns to professional action under the NNL banner, a move the commissioner said aligns with the state government’s commitment to youth development and sports revitalization.
“This is a fulfillment of the promise made by His Excellency, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, during the reception organized for the team after their impressive run to the President Federation Cup final,” Idike stated. He commended the governor’s unwavering support, describing the initiative as a bold step toward repositioning sports in Ebonyi and providing a national platform for the state's young football talents. However, other information about their preparation for the next season and change of new club's name is still scanty as at the time of this report.
