Reactions as Ebonyi Council Chairman Commissions Uncompleted Civic Center
By Innocent Nwanchor
Mixed reactions have trailed the recent commissioning of an uncompleted civic center by the Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Nwankwo, sparking criticism and debate across social and political circles in Ebonyi State.
The event, which was held amidst fanfare, drew backlash from residents and commentators who described the commissioning of an unfinished facility as premature and politically motivated. Photos from the ceremony, widely circulated online, show a structure lacking windows, paint, and essential fittings raising questions about the rationale behind the celebration.
Many on social media criticized the act as an insult to the sensibilities of the people of Ikwo. One commentator wrote:
"Is this the new standard of leadership cutting ribbons on bare blocks and calling it progress?"
Others, however, defended the move, arguing that it signifies the government's commitment to infrastructure development and that commissioning could attract more support to fast-track completion.
A resident, Mr. Igwe, told our correspondent:
"While we appreciate efforts to develop Ikwo Nnoyo, this civic center is clearly not ready as we need a functional civic center and not Ai building.
Attempts to get a response from the council chairman’s office were unsuccessful as of press time.
The controversy has added to the growing debate on accountability, transparency, and the standard of project delivery among local government officials in the state.
