Amasiri/Okporojo Crisis: Diaspora Group Seeks Lasting Peace, Commends Gov Nwifuru For Proactive Measures

...Donates ₦2m Relief
The Ebonyi State Union United Kingdom and Ireland (ESU UK & Ireland) has expressed deep concern over the recent communal disturbances between Amasiri and Okporojo in Oso Edda, describing the violence as painful and regrettable given the long-standing ancestral and familial ties shared by both communities. In a statement jointly signed by its leadership, led by Chief Otu Chukwu-Etuu, and Secretary, Dr. Francis Ama Kalu the diaspora body said it received news of the conflict with sadness and dismay, particularly through disturbing reports and images circulating on social and mainstream media. The group noted that both communities share common matrilineal origins, inter-marriages, and kinship networks, making the loss of lives and destruction of property deeply distressing to Ebonyi indigenes at home and abroad. The union commended the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for what it described as his prompt and courageous intervention, including the deployment of security measures and imposition of a curfew, which it said helped to restore calm and prevent further escalation of violence. ESU UK & Ireland also acknowledged the governor’s previous peace efforts in communal crises such as Effium/Ezza and Isi Nkwo/Abaomege, noting that such interventions have strengthened unity and stability across the state. While appealing for sustained dialogue, negotiation, and inclusive engagement to achieve lasting reconciliation between the warring communities, the union announced a humanitarian donation valued at ₦2,000,000 to support affected families in both areas. The group further revealed that a minute silence was observed during its recent general meeting in honour of those who lost their lives in the conflict, while extending condolences to bereaved families. ESU UK & Ireland called for justice through lawful means, urging authorities to identify and prosecute perpetrators to ensure sustainable peace. The union reaffirmed its confidence in the governor’s leadership and pledged continued diaspora support toward promoting unity, development, and peaceful coexistence in Ebonyi State.
