Sports: SWAN Moves To Boost Cricket In Ebonyi

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria,(SWAN) planning committee for the zonal cricket competition has paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,(NUJ) in Ebonyi State, Comrade Samson Nwafor, at the Dr.Sam Egwu Press Centre,Abakaliki.
The delegation led by the committee chairman, Comrade Emeka Okpara,said the visit was to brief the NUJ on preparations for the zonal cricket competition scheduled for April,8, 2026. He explained that the event is being organised by Ebonyi SWAN in collaboration with the Nigeria Cricket Federation,(NCF).
Okpara noted that the State female cricket team, has consistently brought honour to the state through strong performances at international and national competitions, including the National Sports Festival.
He added that the state cricket team has over the years enjoyed support from South East zonal representative, Dr. Chika Okoro, who has provided scholarships for several athletes to further their education.
He said the initiative aligns with the vision of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to promote sports development and youth engagement across the state.
Okpara also expressed appreciation for the governor’s support for Abakaliki FC.
Describing cricket as a grassroots sport with significant potential, Okpara said efforts are underway to expand participation across the state.
He urged the NUJ to support the initiative, stressing that sports remain a strong tool for unity, entertainment and revenue generation.
In his response, NUJ chairman Comrade Samson Nwafor said it was his first detailed briefing on cricket activities in the state.
He pledged the union’s support to ensure the success of the forthcoming competition and assured the delegation of his readiness to assist where necessary.
Nwafor also commended the leadership of SWAN in the state, led by Comrade Andy Ndubuisi Nwogha, for promoting unity among members and advancing sports development initiatives.
He further appreciated the collaboration between SWAN and the Nigeria Cricket Federation in promoting grassroots sports.
In his remarks, SWAN chairman in the state, Comrade Andy Ndubuisi Nwogha, thanked the NUJ chairman for his support, guidance and commitment to the growth of the union.
He called on individuals and corporate Organisations to invest in sports development, noting that such support would encourage wider participation and growth in games such as basketball, table tennis and cricket.
