Monarch Killing: Ebonyi Youth Council Condemns Attack, Warns Against Recycled Politicians

‎ ‎The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of insecurity in the country, strongly condemning recent killings in Plateau and Ebonyi states.

‎ ‎Speaking to journalists in their Abakaliki office as part of activities marking Easter 2026, the State Chairman of NYCN, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, described the attacks as horrific and unacceptable, particularly the Palm Sunday incident in Jos where gunmen reportedly disguised in military uniforms killed innocent worshippers. ‎ ‎Ochishi said the March 29 attack turned a sacred period of peace and reflection into one of grief, stressing that the impersonation of security personnel by criminals poses a serious threat to national security and public trust. ‎ ‎“This tragedy is not just painful; it is unacceptable. The fact that criminals can impersonate our security forces and unleash terror on defenseless citizens raises serious concerns about the safety of Nigerians,” he said. ‎ ‎The youth leader also decried recent killings in Ebonyi State, including the murder of a traditional ruler, Eze Josphat Ikegwu of Ishinkwo community in Onicha Local Government Area, as well as the earlier killing of Eze Francis Igwe of Ndufu-Alike Ikwo. ‎ ‎He described the trend of targeted attacks, abductions, and killings as alarming. ‎ ‎“Nigerians are tired of mourning. Nigerians are tired of statements. Nigerians want to see action,” Ochishi stressed. ‎ ‎He called on security agencies to launch thorough investigations into the incidents, arrest those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted without delay. ‎ ‎He also urged authorities to probe the reported use of fake military uniforms, warning that it could further erode public confidence in the nation’s security system. ‎ ‎“A nation cannot continue to bleed like this and expect progress. We owe the dead justice, the living protection, and future generations a safer country,” he added. ‎ ‎While sympathizing with affected families and communities, the NYCN urged residents of Ebonyi State to embrace the spirit of Easter by promoting unity, peaceful coexistence, and vigilance. ‎ ‎Ochishi also encouraged young people to remain law-abiding and actively engage in nation-building, including obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections. ‎ ‎He further cautioned against the recycling of underperforming politicians as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for credible and accountable leadership. ‎ ‎The NYCN reaffirmed its commitment to youth development, good governance, and the pursuit of peace and justice in Ebonyi State and across Nigeria. ‎ ‎“Let this Easter inspire a renewed commitment to unity, justice, and service to humanity,” he said. ‎
