Ebonyi Unveils Modern Basketball Facility As South-East Championship Kicks Off

‎ ‎ ‎By Nwogha Ndubuisi, Abakaliki ‎ ‎Ebonyi State yesterday reinforced its growing reputation as a sports development hub with the unveiling of a modern basketball facility and the commencement of the maiden South-East Regional Basketball Championship in Abakaliki.
‎ ‎The three-day championship, which runs from June 5 to June 7, has brought together teams, coaches, administrators and basketball enthusiasts from across the South-East region in what stakeholders described as a major milestone for grassroots sports development. ‎ ‎A major highlight of the event was the commissioning of the newly constructed Hon. Richard Idike Basketball Court, a facility designed to promote basketball development, youth engagement and talent discovery in the state.
‎ ‎Speaking at the opening ceremony on behalf of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports described the tournament as the first regional basketball championship of its scale to be hosted in Ebonyi.
‎ ‎He welcomed officials of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, athletes, coaches and supporters from across the region, noting that the championship reflects the growing popularity and development of basketball in the South-East. ‎ ‎The commissioner commended NBBF President Ahmadu Musa Kida for his contributions to the growth of basketball in Nigeria and praised the South-East representative on the NBBF board, Ugo Udezue, for his role in facilitating both the tournament and the construction of the basketball court. ‎
‎According to him, the championship is more than a sporting contest, serving as a platform for regional integration, friendship and the discovery of young talents capable of representing Nigeria at national and international levels. ‎ ‎He reiterated the state government's commitment to sports and youth development, stressing that continued collaboration with the NBBF and other stakeholders would create opportunities for young people and strengthen the region's sporting ecosystem.
‎ ‎The commissioner also highlighted Ebonyi's recent strides in sports, citing the progress of Abakaliki Basketball Club and other initiatives under Governor Nwifuru's administration as evidence of the government's determination to position the state as a leading destination for sports development in Nigeria. ‎ ‎Declaring the event open,Hon.Idike urged participating teams from Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra and Abia states to compete in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.
‎ ‎In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Basketball Association in Ebonyi, Rev. Fr. Maximus Obododike; the State Acting Coach, Achu Kingsley; the South-East Zonal Coordinator of the National Sports Commission, Ezenma Bernard; as well as Jolly James and Jude Ugada, lauded the initiative. ‎ ‎They noted that the strategic location of the new basketball court would attract more young people to the sport and help nurture future basketball stars from the region. ‎ ‎The event also featured the presentation of awards and the official inauguration of the Hon. Richard Idike Basketball Court. ‎ ‎
