New Dawn: Professor Uro-Chukwu elected National President of Physician-Biochemists
The Association of Medical Biochemists Nigeria, AMBN has elected distinguished Professor Henry Urochukwu as its National President for a term of two years, renewable during the next election of the Association.
Professor Uro-Chukwu studied Medical Physiology, Medicine, and Surgery at the University of PortHarcourt, River State; Obtained Masters degrees in Public Health specializing in Nutrition and Health Care, at the University of Westminster, London, and in Health Policy and Health Systems, from
Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
The election that brought about his emergence took place during the Association's First Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference at AKMAG Hotel, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from June 23rd - 26th, 2026.
The Theme of the event "The Role of Medical Biochemists in Repositioning Medical Education For The 21st Century Healthcare" captured the interest of the Medical Biochemists as various contributions were made in that direction.
At the AGM on June 25th, 2026, elections were conducted in line with the AMBN Constitution, which led to the emergence of distinguished Professor Henry Uro-Chukwu as the National President of AMBN in the Country.

Dr. Boma Harris Opusunju, Financial Secretary, Dr. Oghagbon Ewemade, Publicity Secretary, Dr. Agara Humphrey NdooyaaBari, Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Funke Opajobi and the Ex-Officio, Prof. Blessing Idonijie
The new NEC members were sworn in immediately and has since commenced duties.
In his acceptance speech, the brand new National President of AMBN thanked the Congress for the overwhelming votes that represent explicit confidence, stating that he requires the full support of all to succeed in view of the onerous tasks facing the young Association.
He reiterated that this was a special call for service, emphasizing that Physician-Biochemists remain the most endangered discipline among the sub Specialties of Medicine.
He sighted the presence of the highest authority of the Medical and Dental Council in the occasion as a great boost and honour.
Personalities in attendance at the Scientific Conference included, the Vice Chancellor, University of Uyo, Prof Christopher Ekong represented by the DVC (Academics) & Former Provost, College of Medicine Uniuyo; the Registrar, Medical & Dental Council of Nigeria, Prof Fatima Kyari, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr Abdul Enejo; The Provost College of Health Sciences, University of Calabar, Prof Agim Agim.
The National President Association of Specialists Medical Doctors in Academics, (ASMEDA) Associate Professor John Anionye, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Uniuyo Teaching Hospital, Prof Clement Inyang and the State Chairman Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State, Prof Imo Peter Aniekan among others.
Highlight of the event was the induction Prof Uro-Chukwu and three others as Foundation Fellows of the Association
Physician-Biochemists from at least ten University Colleges of Medicine including Universities of Benin, Uyo, Calabar, AEFUNAI, Rivers State University, Igbenedion University, University of Abuja, Federal University Lafia, Edo State University, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, were in attendance with others participating online.
AMBN appreciates the outgoing Interim Caretaker Committee and thanks all members, and the Local Organizing Committee for a successful Uyo conference.
