Mass Transit Operators Lift Ban On Vehicular Operations in Ebonyi

This is following an agreement reached by the national leadership of the Association in a meeting with Governor David Umahi at the new Governor's office in Abakaliki. Recall that the State government had sealed all private parks belonging to Mass transit operators within the State capital on Tuesday for allegedly refusing to move to government designated location opposite the International Market, Abakaliki. The action which resulted in the companies boycotting activities in the State, had since then crippled movement into and out of the State leaving commuters stranded The Commissioner for Capital City Development, Onyekachi Nwebonyi and his counterpart of Parks and Market Development, Eze Nwachukwu with the National President of the Association of Mass Transit Operators of Nigeria, Gregory Inyaba, briefed newsmen at the end of the closed door meeting. Nwebonyi explained that the State government, after review of the problem, decided to extend by one month, the time for the relocation of their mass transit parks to the new government designated location. Nwebonyi said: “The issues regarding the relocation of the motorists to the new general park, have all been resolved, in the sense that both the government and the motorists are now in the same page. ” We listened to some of the challenges that are actually hindering the relocation, but as I speak to you, we have laid to rest all those challenges. “And as government, we have also listened to their problems, and in doing so, we have extended the date for the relocation from 30th of September to 1st of November, 2021. ” That is almost a month time, to enable them put in place some infrastructure at the new park to enable their businesses flourish. ” The AMTON national president who corroborated Nwebobyi’s explanation, added that he would meet with his people to enable them go back to their various depots to continue their businesses while the both sides work on getting the new site ready within the extended period. He informed that the Governor had agreed to provide security fencing and internal roads in the new site while they develope their structures. Inyaba noted: “We have agreed with him that by the grace of God, we will go back to our various depots where we were operating before now, while we will go to the new site and start developing the place, which he gave us one month to build. ” And he has other things he will do for us: to put the fencing, put internal roads. “So, we believe, and from this moment, we will start operation. ” There is no need to keep holding our people. ” Meanwhile, on the question of what becomes of the present park locations of these Mass Transit companies after relocation to the new governnent site, Nwebonyi explained that the companies would still retain their properties there but would put it into use according to what the State government may designate the area.
