The 2023 edition of Ngboejeogu Unity Cup Competition has kicked off on Thursday with youths charged to take advantage of the football game to be productive. Performing the kick off ceremony at the Ngbo Central School, the Speaker of Ebonyi state House of Assembly,Rt Hon Moses Ije Odunwa hinted that the competition has presented opportunity for the youths of the area to harness their talent in the sporting sector.
Odunwa noted that the competition would create an avenue for recreation and social cohesion as talents would be discovered and groomed from the event which may then become the means of livelihood to some families in the nearest future. He Commended the organizer and sponsor of the competition, the Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon Comrade Chinedu Onah for his foresight in adequately engaging the youths in his area in meaningful enterprises and for bringing social amenities to his constituency.
In his remarks, the Deputy Speaker, Hon Comrade Chinedu Onah stated that the competition is part of the various measures adopted by his Foundation- the Ojichiaga Foundation and the request from the youths in the area to put smiles on their faces. Onah disclosed that other programmes embarked by his Foundation- include scholarship awards to undergraduates which saw 84 students benefitting during his first term in office, visits to widows in the hinterlands for the distribution of palliatives, Poverty Allievation to indigents, widows and the less privileged. The Deputy Speaker thanked members of the state Assembly for coming in their numbers and other dignitaries for honouring the event. Earlier, the Director General of Ojichiaga Foundation, Mr. Kenneth Odanwu, maintained that the Foundation is geared towards ensuring overall wellbeing and development of the communities adding that sporting activities play an important role in shaping the character of the youths, instill discipline, create spirit of teamwork and resilience. Also, the Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Inyima thanked the sponsor of the event and implored the competing teams to imbibe good spirit of sportsmanship throughout the competition. In a separate interview, the Vice Chancellor, Coal City University Enugu, Prof. Afam Ituma and Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Comrade Oguozor Offia Nwali said that the competition would encourage unity and oneness in the area. The competition will run till the first week of 2024 and has ten participating teams drawn from the 10 communities in Ngboejeogu clan.
