Just In: Ebonyi Government Disburses N100m Relief Fund to Afikpo Flood Victims
The Ebonyi State Government has disbursed N100 million and relief materials to 894 victims of flooding in Enohia Itim community, Afikpo Local Government Area of the state.
The community was devastated by heavy flooding between July and August this year, which claimed eight lives and destroyed houses, farms, and properties worth millions of naira.
performing the flag-off on Tuesday at the Council's Headquarters, the acting governor of Ebonyi state, Princess Patricia Obila stated that the money and relief items disbursed to the victim's families was in fulfillment of the government’s promise to come to their aid following the flood disaster.
She described Governor Nwifuru as a compassionate leader who does not joke with the well-being of the people and assured the people of government continuous support to ensure such incident is not repeated in the next year.
Supervising the exercise, the Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mrs. Ann Aligwe, praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for the intervention, describing him as a “welfarist governor.”
She noted that the gesture aligns with the governor’s Charter of Needs manifesto, which prioritizes the welfare of citizens.
Also speaking, Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, Mr. Timothy Nwachi, described the Nwifuru administration as “responsive,” noting that past flood disasters in the area had gone without compensation. He commended the government’s swift action, stressing that their distress call was answered in less than 32 days.
Some beneficiaries, including Mrs. Blessing Okoche, who lost her mother and younger sister, and Mrs. Favour Edwin, who lost her 22-year-old son, expressed gratitude to the state government. They said the assistance would help cushion the hardship caused by the disaster.
Our correspondent reports that deceased families receive N1 million each. Victims whose farms were destroyed were given N500,000 each, while others received N250,000. In addition to the cash, every beneficiary went home with four bags of rice, two bags of garri, a mattress, and buckets.
