Breaking: Court Convicts IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu of Terrorism

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on multiple counts bordering on terrorism.

Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, found Kanu guilty on counts one, two, and three of the seven-count charge filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS). The court held that the defendant’s various broadcasts, which allegedly contained threats of violence, killings, and declarations of sit-at-home orders across the South-East, amounted to acts of terrorism as defined under Nigerian law. Justice Omotosho further held that the prosecution successfully established the elements of incitement and terrorism financing linked to the IPOB leader. The court also convicted Kanu on counts four and five, which accuse him of inciting attacks that led to the burning of police stations, killing of police officers, and destruction of federal government properties in parts of the South-East. The judgment is still being delivered at the time of filing this report, as the court continues to address the remaining charges and potential sentencing.
