‘I’m Still in Charge’~ Ebonyi NYCN Boss Quashes Removal Rumour, Preaches Unity

The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Douglas Uchishi, has dismissed rumours of his removal from office, affirming that he remains the legitimate and duly elected leader of the Council.
Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, Uchishi described the recent misunderstanding within the Council as a “minor internal issue” which has been amicably resolved through the intervention of key stakeholders. “There was never any plan to remove me from office. I was duly elected and have a legitimate tenure to serve,” he said. “What happened was that some members expressed grievances, which is normal in any organization. Even in marriage, disagreements occur. This was our first misunderstanding since our inauguration in May 2024, and we have moved forward as one.”
The NYCN Chairman noted that unity in the Council has been further strengthened following mediation led by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, the Vice Chairman of the Council, Richard Iduke, and the Chairman of the Advisory Council. Highlighting recent achievements, Uchishi said the Ebonyi Youth Council played a major role in preventing the nationwide hunger protests of August 2024 and has maintained an active youth office at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
He added that under his leadership, the Ebonyi State Youth Council has become one of the most vibrant in the country, attributing the progress to consistent government support. “Before my administration, the Council was almost moribund. Today, it has regained its voice. We now have a working relationship with the state government, and our focus remains on empowering and protecting Ebonyi youths,” he stated. On the upcoming Anambra governorship election, Uchishi urged Ebonyi youths residing in the state to avoid violence and participate peacefully in the electoral process. “If you have your voter’s card, go to the polls and vote peacefully. Let your voice be heard through the ballot, not through violence,” he advised. He also raised concerns over security in border communities and disclosed ongoing collaboration with security agencies to safeguard lives and property. Commending Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration for its “People’s Charter of Needs” policy, Uchishi lauded the government’s achievements in infrastructure, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding. “When a government delivers on its promises, the people naturally express support. The youths of Ebonyi are ready to return this administration in 2027,” he declared. Reaffirming his commitment to youth development, Uchishi emphasized that the Council remains united, proactive, and focused on initiatives that “protect, empower, and uplift Ebonyi youths.”
