Just In: Gov. Nwifuru unveils record ₦884bn 2026 budget, plans ₦150bn loan for new cement factory

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has presented a proposed eight hundred and eighty-four billion naira as its budget for the 2026 fiscal year for citizens participation and input.
Speaking during the Citizens Input on the 2026 Budget Presentation held at the Christ Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, the governor described the unprecedented leap from last year’s three hundred and ninety billion naira budget to the new figure as one of the key benefits of the removal of fuel subsidy. Governor Nwifuru noted that the proposed figure is the highest budget in the history of Ebonyi State, describing it as a major challenge for both public officials and citizens and prayed for God’s guidance to ensure the state meets its development targets by the end of 2026.
He explained that the 2026 budget captures the needs of all sectors and reflects citizens’ submissions during consultations. The governor urged the public to continue supporting his administration, noting that several signature projects are scattered across the state. He assured that his administration remains committed to fulfilling all promises made to the people.
Nwifuru commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for economic policies which, according to him, have strengthened sub-national development, adding that the remarkable jump in Ebonyi’s budget was made possible by subsidy removal.
On internally generated revenue, the governor assured that his administration remains mindful of over-taxation, which informs his decision not to burden citizens with heavy taxes. He stressed that the new federal tax law exempts poor Nigerians from tax, while ensuring that wealthy individuals who previously evaded payments are now compelled to comply. Governor Nwifuru also announced that the state will, for the first time, borrow one hundred and fifty billion naira to establish a state-owned cement factory. He said the loan would be repaid by the factory once it becomes operational. Although the location is yet to be finalized, he assured that residents will be fully briefed once a decision is reached.
The governor, who said his administration believes in action, revealed that Ebonyi State will begin commissioning completed projects from May 1st, 2026, through May 2027. He disclosed that ten major signature projects have been lined up for commissioning, with President Tinubu expected to attend a four-day commissioning programme.
The Citizens Input on the 2026 budget presentation was participated by traditional rulers, market women, artisans, the National Youth Council and other youth groups.
