‎ ‎The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in the State Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abakaliki Branch, Eld. Barr. Prince Alfred N. Nwizi, as a Notary Public of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
‎ ‎The swearing-in ceremony, held on Friday at the Chief Justice’s Court in Abakaliki, was conducted by the Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Elvis Ngele, on behalf of the Chief Justice. ‎ ‎The elevation is regarded as a significant milestone in the legal profession.
‎ A Notary Public is a senior legal practitioner authorized under the Notaries Public Act, 2023 to authenticate legal documents, administer oaths, witness signatures, and certify instruments for both local and international transactions. ‎ ‎Speaking with journalists shortly after taking the oath, Barr. Nwizi described the appointment as a fulfilment of a long-held professional ambition.
‎ ‎“Being sworn in today as a Notary Public of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a great honour and a major milestone in my legal career. ‎ ‎"I applied as far back as April 23, 2023, and the approval was granted a few days ago by the Chief Justice of Nigeria in line with the provisions of the Notaries Public Act, 2023,” he said. ‎
‎He noted that the appointment process is rigorous, requiring applicants to meet strict professional criteria, including a minimum of seven years of legal practice, ownership of a registered law firm, and consistent compliance with professional obligations. ‎ ‎Barr. Nwizi urged young lawyers to remain committed and dedicated to their careers, encouraging them to aspire to professional excellence and apply for such positions when qualified. ‎ ‎“With commitment and dedication, young lawyers can attain great heights in the profession. As legal practitioners, we are officers of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and must uphold its integrity,” he added.
‎ ‎With his new role, Barr. Nwizi is expected to contribute to reducing fraud and enhancing public confidence in legal documentation processes. ‎ ‎Until his appointment, he has served in various capacities within the legal community, including as Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abakaliki Branch, and as a member of the Association’s National Executive Committee.
