Police Dismiss Claim of Officer’s Wife Child Abduction Allegation In Ebonyi ‎

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎The Ebonyi State Police Command has dismissed allegations linking the wife of a police officer to child abduction in Amachi Amagu Community, Abakaliki Local Government Area, describing the claims as unsubstantiated after a thorough investigation.
‎ ‎The Command said it became necessary to clarify the incident following a trending online report alleging that the woman attempted to abduct children in the community. ‎ ‎According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, the incident occurred on March 20, 2026, and involved Mrs. Mercy Chioma Nwewu, wife of an Inspector of Police.
‎ ‎Ukandu explained that the woman was confronted by some members of the community after she was allegedly seen wandering around the area suspiciously. She was reportedly stripped and tied up by the mob while being questioned over allegations of child abduction. ‎ ‎The Police spokesman stated that operatives swiftly responded to a distress call from a concerned resident who feared the woman could be lynched by the angry crowd. ‎ ‎“She was rescued by police operatives and taken to the Central Police Station, Abakaliki, where she was detained pending investigation,” the statement said. ‎ ‎The Command noted that community members were invited to provide evidence or statements to support the allegations against her, but none of the accusers came forward during the investigation. ‎ ‎Ukandu added that police officers also visited the community several times in the course of the investigation, but no useful information linking the woman to child trafficking or abduction was found. ‎ ‎Preliminary findings, according to the statement, revealed that Mrs. Nwewu suffers episodes of mental instability following a traumatic stillbirth experience, a condition said to be supported by a medical report she presented to investigators. ‎ ‎The Police further disclosed that her bank account records were examined for suspicious transactions, but findings showed that the funds in her account were proceeds from her trading business accumulated over the years. ‎ ‎“The investigation did not establish any evidence linking her to any child abduction case in Ebonyi State,” the statement added. ‎ ‎The Command urged members of the public to avoid jungle justice and always allow law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations in accordance with the law. ‎
