By Ndubuisi Nwogha, Abakaliki
The successful conclusion of the 2026 Samuel Okwaraji Memorial Under-16 School Football Championship has once again highlighted the enormous football potential that exists in secondary schools across Ebonyi State.
Beyond the trophies and medals, the tournament served as a platform for discovering young talents, promoting healthy competition, and honouring the legacy of the late Nigerian football icon, Samuel Okwaraji.
With twelve secondary schools participating, the championship reflected a growing commitment to grassroots sports development.
Schools from different parts of the state displayed discipline, teamwork, and technical ability, proving that school football remains one of the strongest foundations for nurturing future stars.
The third-place playoff between Akanu Ibiam Memorial Seminary and Nnodo Secondary School showcased determination and resilience.
The closely contested encounter, which was decided through a penalty shootout, demonstrated the competitive spirit among the young players.
Akanu Ibiam Memorial Seminary eventually triumphed 5-4 on penalties after a hard-fought contest.
The final lived up to expectations as Esthington International Academy, Onueke defeated Government Technical College, Abakaliki 2-1 in an entertaining match.
The victory underlined Esthington's consistency throughout the competition and rewarded their attacking style of play. Government Technical College also earned commendation for putting up a spirited performance despite falling short in the final.
One of the biggest gains from the tournament is talent identification.
Several players exhibited qualities that could attract the attention of football scouts, coaches, and academies.
If properly monitored and developed, many of these youngsters could eventually represent Ebonyi State at the National Sports Festival, feature in Nigeria's age-grade national teams, and even pursue professional football careers.
The peaceful organization of the competition also deserves recognition. According to the Ebonyi State Coordinator of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) and Head of Department, Education Service, Mrs. Nwali Victoria, the championship ended successfully in a peaceful atmosphere, reinforcing the importance of sports in promoting discipline, friendship, and unity among students.
As Ebonyi continues to invest in youth and sports development, competitions such as the Samuel Okwaraji Memorial Championship according to the Chairman committee on Youth Development And Sports in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Nwoke should be sustained and expanded to include more schools and sporting disciplines.
Regular school competitions will not only produce elite athletes but also help keep students engaged in productive activities while promoting physical fitness and academic excellence.
The 2026 championship has therefore achieved more than producing a winner.
It has rekindled the spirit of school sports in Ebonyi State and offered renewed hope that the next generation of football stars may well emerge from the classrooms and playing fields of the state.
